In January 2011, then-Mayor Gavin Newsom appointed George Gascón to success newly elected State Attorney General Kamala Harris as San Francisco District Attorney. Gascón was serving has Chief of the San Francisco Police Department at the time, had only lived in the city for two years, had never run for elected office before, and faced reelection in November 2011 against a number of qualified candidates. WMCSM helped lead the media campaign that separated Gascón from the pack. The campaign highlighted Gascón’s personal history as an immigrant from Cuba who worked hard to achieve success. The media persuaded voters that Gascón was the most qualified candidate to lead the District Attorney’s office.
With a highly competitive election and a ranked-choice voting system, the campaign enabled Gascón to win handily with over 60% of the vote.
WMSCM has worked on dozens of candidate campaigns including: Mark Leno for State Senate, Noreen Evans for State Senate and State Assembly, Don Perata for State Senate, Jerry Brown for Oakland Mayor, and Dennis Herrera for San Francisco City Attorney.
